The 6th Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), the industry program of Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), has announced the official selections for this year’s Project Spotlight: The Philippines.
Each year, Project Spotlight selects one country and focuses on the diversity of its film genre. This year, NAFF has chosen to highlight the Philippines for their unique stories and storytelling ability. With the inception in 2008, the 6th edition of Project Spotlight is expecting another energetic celebration for those attending this year’s event as they interact with the industry’s movers and shakers with the support from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
Seven projects have been officially selected for this year’s event, a reminder of the rapid emergence of genre films from the Philippines. These seven projects have been selected after having gone through a tough selection criterion where the selection jury looked closely at each project’s originality, commitment to its genre, and the possibility of its completion. This year’s selected projects are from professionals who have placed themselves on the Filipino and global filmmaking map. Amable ‘Tikoy’ AGUILUZ, the director of SEGURISTA and MANILA KING, will be bringing DANCE OF DEATH, a story about a warrior prince who must avenge his massacred family by entering the Gates of Hell. The director of MONDOMANILA, Khavn De La CRUZ, will be turning his 62nd Berlinale selected short film, RUINED HEART! ANOTHER LOVE STORY ABOUT A CRIMINAL AND A WHORE, into a feature film this time around. Director of YANGGAW and CORAZON, Richard SOMES, will be bringing, THY KINGDOM COME, an end-of-the-world action, fantasy film whereas director Ato BAUTISTA of NEIGHBOR NO.13, a 2009 NAFF It Project selection, will bring BAD BLOOD, a bloody, action thriller. Director of BENEATH THE COGON, Rico Maria ILARDE, is set to bring TUSOK, a slasher horror film to this year’s event. Producer of THE GRAVE BANDITS, Vanessa ULGADO, NAFF’s 2012 Fantastic Film School alumna, will be teaming up with American-based director Tyrone ACIERTO again and will be bringing A BOY WHO ROAMED THE SKY, a fantasy, live-action/animation film. And finally, director Peter EDURIA III, a young director under the apprenticeship of Cannes-winner Brillante MENDOZA, will be vying to compete with his project HOTLINE.
Throughout the 4 day event, Project Spotlight participants will be engaged in 30 minute long, 1-on-1 meetings with investors and distributors in the hopes to find potential partners to complete and eventually share their work with the rest of the world. On Tuesday, July 23rd, a special pitching session titled, “Pitching & Luncheon,” will take place for Project Spotlight participants. Their marketing savvy will be tested in this year’s event as it will conducted in a speed pitch format where each representative of a project will be given a very short time to pitch and entice the jury of their work. At the end of the day, a special reception will take place, highlighting both projects and films from the Philippines being showcased at PiFan. The reception will be attended by official guests from the Philippines, representatives from the Embassy of the Philippines in Korea, as well as guests from both NAFF and PiFan.
Project Spotlight participants will vie for cash awards totaling $50,000 USD and three post-production support awards, which will be handed out during the NAFF Award Ceremony & Closing Party on July 24th.
